Today, with the development of polyurethane finishes and aniline dyes, most finishes are synthetic. It can be said that there are as many ways to make a violin finish as there are to make a violin. The Finish Plays a Very Important Role in the Sound Once a sound post is in place, only the pressure of the tuned strings keeps it in place. (The position of a sound post inside a violin is critical, and moving it by even very small amounts can make a big difference in sound quality and loudness.) The luthier also carves its ends to fit the internal shape of the top and back. The sound post is also the only internal part of a string instrument that isn’t glued into place - instead, a luthier will move it up and down to best fit the acoustics of the individual instrument. It’s interesting that in Spain, this small piece is referred to as the “Alma,” which translates in English as the “Soul” of the instrument. However, without it, the instrument is useless, since the sound post acts to transfer the vibration of the strings from the top to the back of the instrument … which eventually produces the tone and is responsible for the sound projection. It could be said that the most vital component is the sound post, which appears at first glance to be nothing more than a simple spruce dowel between the top and back of the instrument. Some parts may seem ornamental, as opposed to functional, but the reality is that every piece of wood plays an important role in contributing to the sound the instrument produces. These are dense materials that hold up to long-term use. Ebony and rosewood can be used for pegs, tailpiece, fingerboard and (in the case of violin and viola) chin rest. Tops are normally spruce, which is much softer and helps produce a strong tone. The back, ribs and neck are carved from maple, which is a rigid wood. In general, it takes 70 pieces of wood to craft a string instrument, whether it’s a violin, viola, cello or bass. It Takes a Lot of Wood to Make a String Instrument The same material went into stringing tennis racquets up until the 20th century, before scientists developed polymers. It’s true that these were a byproduct of animal intestines - but they came from the intestines of sheep, not cats. The viola and cello also changed form during that era.īonus trivia: Perhaps you’ve heard that many early stringed instruments originally used “catgut” strings. Italy was the leader, home of the great Cremonese School that brought forth the Amati design that was later the basis for designs by Gaspar d’Salo, Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri and other well-known violin-makers. By all accounts, the bowed instruments of today were largely the development of European instrument-making guilds in the 16th century, during what is now called the “Golden Age” of violin making. A phorminx.īut how and exactly when these developed into modern string instruments is largely lost to history. Some were played with a bow, but the shapes were quite different from those we now recognize. There were many types of stringed musical instruments then, such as the harp, lyre, phorminx and psalatery. String instruments date back to at least ancient Greek times. We hope it will mean as much to our fans as it has to us-it’s not just our show now, it’s theirs, too.” The show also marks the first theatrical collaboration between Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Walt Disney Imagineering. “This collaboration has been unlike anything we’ve done before. “This show has been in the works for years and to finally share it with the world is a dream come true,” said Daniel Lamarre, president and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. She held down a part-time job at the local radio station reading the news while still in high school and earned a full scholarship to Tennessee State University where she thrived. She moved to Tennessee to live with her father and made a transformation – she excelled in academics, was active in speech and debate, and won a statewide beauty pageant. Yet she was able to turn things around by the end of high school. Her life started in some of the poorest conditions possible in America: born in the 1950s in rural Mississippi to a teenage mother, she was abused from the age of 9, ran away from home at 13, became pregnant at 14 and lost her baby shortly after birth. So I’ve started collecting stories about the failures of successful people, as a reminder that if you’re making mistakes and learning from them, you’re actually on the path to success. Once we realize that our heroes are just like us, we can examine how failure drives success. Failure is a humbling exercise, both for the observer and the observed. Our heroes need to be held to the same standard as the ancient Greek gods: awesome but not infallible. We know this about ourselves but even as we learn to accept our own failures, sometimes we don’t recognize that the most successful people in the world have had an abundance of failure. It is through failure that these individuals were able to learn, grow and ultimately succeed. But each of them failed epically and repeatedly, more so than the combined successes of all of humanity.įailure should not be overlooked in anyone, especially not those we admire. Colonel Harris had the Seventy-fifth Ohio, now dismounted, take up a position in "the fill of the Florida railroad"and behind adjacent fences. Just 30 minutes later, however, pickets pickets brought in news that a Confederate column was approaching. Believing the immediate danger to be over, Colonel Harris allowed his men to feed their horses, make coffee and engage in some looting. Company B, Fourth Massachusetts Cavalry attacked and dislodged the Confederates, forcing them to retreat. They arrived on schedule to find the town occupied by one company from the Second Florida Cavalry, numbering around 70 men. Hoping to strike Gainesville at first light on August 17, the Federals marched through the night. A party of 12-15 Florida Unionists also turned out to help, raising the total strength of Harris' command to around 310 men. After destroying a fortified picket post on the New River, the raiding party advanced to Starke where it was joined by 90 officers and men from the Fourth Massachusetts Cavalry. His command included 173 officers and men from the Seventy-Fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry (mounted) 12 men with one cannon from Company A, Third Rhode Island Artillery, and 15 cooks, blacksmiths, wagon drivers, etc. Harris of the Seventy-Fifth Ohio Infantry left Baldwin near Jacksonville on August 15, 1864. Dickison, the Confederacy's famed "Swamp Fox" of Florida. His forces were badly defeated there by Captain J.J. Hatch on the raid he had sent against the Florida Railroad at Gainesville. "I.am sorry that I have little good news." So began the report of Union Brigadier General John P. It took place at the city's key intersection on August 17, 1864. I highly recommend this film it does not glamorize the story, and while it may not be completely accurate, it rings true, and portrays a life many artists may wish for, until they get it.The Battle of Gainesville was small, fierce action of the War Between the States in Florida. It shows the schizophrenic nature of NY Lutece, a homeless person sleeping outside, a man selling stuffed animals on the street, and Bruno Bischofsberger(Hopper) who mistakes Basquiat for a homeless person, trying to clean the windows on his Mercedes. The NY street sequences are realistic, It is not glamorous (though the accompanying jazz music is). The scenes with Claire Forlani are also effective, Basquiat's some-time girlfriend, we see her as a waitress, then a junkie, then a cleaned-up version, going to Columbia. The visuals are also noteworthy, while an earlier review critiqued the surfboarding sequence, I find that a preferable segue to Basquiat's need to escape apparently he owned a good deal of property in Hawai'i and spent time there as well. There is one scene where he is beaten up so two street people can take steal a "SAMO" inscription on a piece of metal. An artist who rose too fast, was used and discarded- apparently in real life Basquiat had a tendency to be generous, and gave away many of his paintings. Keeping in mind that Basquiat was under age 30 when he died, this story is credible. The only annoying performance was Parker Posey, as gallery owner Mary Boone, who perhaps portrayed this person too close to the mark. An amusing cameo with Christopher Walken as a James Lipton character a pretentious interviewer. That aside, the film also has some interesting cameos, David Bowie as Warhol is excellent, Dennis Hopper as the Zurich art dealer, Bruno Bischofsburger is very believable. Certainly, if one believes even half of what is written about the NY art world- it cannot have been a forgiving place. Perhaps in real life this was one of the sources of his insecurities, and reason for his drug addiction. Not just another story of fame and its vices, however because the film does NOT show his life as glamorous, indeed once he has "made it" we still see him dining at Lutece, people critiquing, being unaccepting of him as a person. Apparently he and his father were estranged, until he became famous. Jeffrey Wright is very understated, but believable as Basquiat. Granted, the film is a bit abstruse, and some viewers have complained about the music tracks (actually Basquiat's own music from his band) but it does serve to show the disaffected life of an artist, who seemed to gain fame, money, and fair-weather friends, despite himself. Of Jean Michel Basquiat and the art world of the 80's. |
